Earth smoke is a traditional herb for driving away harmful influences. It is also associated with the elemental forces and the beings of the Otherworld. In the Middle Ages it was used in exorcistic rites.
Especially mixed with camphor and olibanum, earth smoke is strongly purifying and grounding. When smoked, it develops a typically herbaceous scent.
